#14 - Aston Villa appoint Steven Gerrard as Head Coach

After Villa's 1-0 defeat to Southampton, Dean Smith was sacked and replaced by the former Liverpool midfielder.

Aston Villa Supporters Trust member Stuart Paul said: "Initially I was lukewarm to the appointment because like most Villa fans, I was a bit upset Dean Smith got sacked - but the owners realised he couldn't take us to the next level, as shown by the recent results."

The defeat at St. Mary's was Villa's 18th league defeat in 2021.

Paul said: "What Gerrard does have over Dean Smith is a greater experience at the highest level, and that can only benefit us."

With Villa sitting 16th in the Premier League, Paul believes conceding fewer goals is crucial to help move away from the relegation zone.

Paul said: "Our long-term aim should be to consistently compete for the European places, make a serious attempt to win a trophy and bring more youth players through the academy."

Gerrard's short time in management has seen him win the SPFL with Rangers by going unbeaten in the league and leading them to a record breaking 55th Scottish league title.

Gerrard's switch to Villa on a three-and-a-half-year deal saw the West Midlands side pay Rangers £3m in compensation.

Villa Spaces podcast host Ty Bracey said: "I was sceptical about the appointment at first, but the more I think about it the more I warm to the idea."

Gerrard's style of play has been described as aggressive and assertive whilst demanding a huge contribution from his full-backs in attack.

Bracey said: "I think due to the rocky start to the season, we have to take any place in the top half."
